Monday Mar 01, 2021
What is the clinical difference between feeling a bit low and depression? Within the diagnosis of depression, how many different types are there? When do the lines blur and when should you seek help? In this episode, we are chatting to Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr. Ahmed Ismail. Dr Ismail has over 20 years’ experience in a mental health setting and is not just a consultant psychiatrist – he’s also a fully qualified cognitive behavioural therapist too! He chats with us today about depression, both clinical and non-clinical and helps us to understand the difference between the two as well as what CBT therapy is, his experience and how it can help.
Best Quotes:
‘’We can all become a bit depressed from time to time, we can feel a bit low, but often than not, then we're able to shake it off, we're able to come out of it, we are able to talk ourselves up a bit about the way we feel - and that normally works for a lot of people in many situations… but for some people, that drop in mood can be quite significant.’’
‘’Loss sometimes doesn't have to be the physical loss or losing a person, it could be loss of status, loss of meanings, loss of something that you hold dear to yourself. It could be many, many things.’’
‘’I think psychological treatment, like talking therapy, trying to really look at the reason you feel that way is important because often those feelings are triggered by negative views about yourself or about other people and about the world.’’
